C&D debris recycling
Bill Booker: "Mid-America Recycling was formed
in 1988, and we used a jaw crusher-based recycling system initially, but we experienced to
many problems. Jaw crushers aren't efficient enough for concrete recycling, have problems
with rebar, and our jaw system took much too long to move. We decided to switch to a plant
that would be easier to move and has a crusher designed for recycling. We investigates
several manufacturers before selecting the Grasan KR1315 impactor-based system. Grasan
pioneered in concrete recycling in America, and they have more experience with
impactor-based recycling systems than anyone else. They understood our needs, gave us some
very good advice, and customized the system design accordingly."
Mid-America's plant consists of a Grasan
road-portable KR1315 electric-powered impactor plant, 48" x 55' screen feed conveyor
with electromagnetic separator, 6' x 20' horizontal screening plant with 3-deck screen,
24' x 55' oversize return conveyor, 36" x 35' portable transfer conveyor with
electromagnetic separator, 36" x 75' road-portable radial stacker and a complete
electrical control system.
Mid-America has just purchased a second Grasan
KRH1515 recycling system for 1998 delivery.

Larry Burcalow, President and Owner
Yahara Materials, Inc.
Wanakee, Wisconsin
Recycling concrete, crushing limestone
Yahara had owned and operated limestone quarries
since 1955. In 1982, the company got into concrete and asphalt recycling on an
experimental basis. Today recycling accounts for more than 25% of Yahara's business and is
growing in importance each year. Recyclables come from two major sources: 1)Area
construction and demolition contractors haul rubble to four of Yahara's eight quarries. 2)
Yahara sets up portable crushing plants at highway reconstruction sites and recycles
torn-up pavement on the spot.
Yahara operates five portable jaw crushers, and one
portable Grasan KR1515 plant. Formerly the company used jaw plants only, but found them
unsuited for recycling and less efficient than the impactor for crushing both limestone
and recyclables.
Larry Burcalow: "Our KR1515 is much faster than
a jaw - over 500 tons per hour - and it shatters the concrete so the steel is left clean.
It;s all much more efficient for crushing limestone. We'll run up to 700 TPH of limestone
through our impactor, but only 400 to 450 through our jaws. "
"We bought our impactor plant in 1994 after
checking out several manufacturers. We chose Grasan for their quality reputation and their
model KR1515 for its large size and easy mobility. Usually we can tear down at one
location, move to another, and be crushing in less than a day. Also, Grasan was willing to
customize a plant for us. Some manufacturers can't or won't customize. And dealing with
big-company engineering departments can be a long, expensive, frustrating experience that
still might not get you what you want. I described my operation to Grasan engineers and we
drew some sketches on a note pad. They took it from there."
Yahara recently purchased a Grasan mobile secondary
crushing plant with a horizontal screen and KRH1515 impactor.

Bob Thompson, President
Thompson-McCully Co.
Belleville, Michigan
Asphalt recycling
Thompson-McCully Co. is Michigan's largest hot-mix
asphalt production and paving company. In 1994, the company decided there was an
opportunity to crush its own asphalt rubble and incorporate it into paving mixtures due to
technological advancements in crushing equipment. The results would be a higher quality
and cost control while helping the environment.
Bob Thompson: "To do this we needed a
road-portable plant with a horizontal impact crusher. Our greatest concern was finding a
recycling system that would give us trouble-free service in continuous hard use, and would
set up and tear down quickly and travel easily about 30 times a year to service our eight
plants and other customer locations."
"We checked out several manufacturers and found
that Grasan gave us the best quality and value, and could build exactly what we wanted.
We've found the Grasan KR1515 to be extremely durable with minimal maintenance. Grasan's
timely service capability is important to us, also. We have over 500 employees but no
maintenance personnel. So dependable equipment and service are absolutely essential.
Grasan people were with us for start-up, and they're available to us at a moment's notice.
The Grasan KR1515 plant is every bit as durable, dependable, and efficient as we had
expected, with minimal maintenance."
Thompson-McCully Co. also operates a Grasan 2236
road-portable jaw system for crushing aggregates and just purchased a pit-portable KR1620
impactor plant for their limestone quarry.
